Character Background:
The game Ib starts with the main character, Ib, being forced to go to an art gallery with her parents. Things go down south pretty quickly from there.

Garry is first seen staring at a painting. He's not given any significant backstory beyond the gallery. Like the main character, he quickly becomes lost in an world of living paintings. The gallery darkens, people disappear, and there is only one place to go. The only escape is a painting itself, which serves as a portal downwards into an alternate world.

Ib and Garry do not enter the reality at the same time. They separate and meet later. Inexplicably, they are the only two humans seen in the
other world.

Each human that enters this world is given a rose. The rose serves as a lifeline and a health bar. If the rose dies, so does the person holding it. Both characters stumble upon a rose and take it with them, bonding their souls to their respective flowers.

Garry doesn't get too far on his own. He's attacked by a living painting of a woman. The painting steals his rose and plays a game of "loves me, loves me not" with the petals. Ib finds Garry half dead on the floor while looking for an escape.
She saves Garry's life by taking his rose from the painting and putting it in a vase of water. Garry sticks with the main character for almost the remainder of the game.

Eventually the pair run into a distinctly different living painting, Mary. Mary lies and pretends she is human to satisfy her need for companionship.

In their exploration of the gallery, the two girls, Mary and Ib, get separated from Garry by a painting of a rose that forcibly splits them apart.

Garry tries to find another way around to rejoin them. During his adventures when separated, he discovers that Mary isn't human. He finds a book in one of the rooms that details her fakeness. Determined and now wary of Mary's behavior, he rushes to find the two again. He meets up with the rest of the characters in a stairwell just in time. Mary has Ib cornered. Garry shoves her over and the pair bolts.

This is where freaky shit starts going down. As the game progresses, it's clear that Mary is somehow influencing the setting. Eventually the two characters are trapped inside a world of Mary's creation. They escape Mary's wrath by finding and burning the original painting of Mary. Mary is destroyed with the painting. During this, Garry is hurt. Ib gives him a handkerchief to stop the bleeding.

After a bit more exploring, Garry and Ib manage to escape through a large painting that serves as an exit portal. Even though the alternate reality begs Ib to stay by baiting her with a false image of her mother, Garry convinces Ib to grab his hand and yanks her through. THE END.

NOW FOR PERSONALITY because lo has to do this.

Garry's personality is best summed up by what Ib says about him: "Why do you talk like a lady?"

He isn't by any means a macho young man. The young adult is effeminate and well mannered. Garry is also a bit of the eccentric type, as proved by his hair and style of dressing. No one else in the story really dresses like Garry. The main character even shows surprise in how beat up and ragged his coat is. He's also much more motherly and gentle than a typical man.

He isn't a coward, but can be excitable. In one cutscene, he gets shocked by not one, but two things. Granted, both things were out of the ordinary, but he does respond with a fairly silly little, "Eek!" He can be a scardey cat.

He also stutters a whole lot when he's shocked or stunned. Yes, typical anime shocked fashion. Also in a typical rpg fashion, when alone, he often thinks out loud.

Despite a ton of bad things happening to him he is filled with exclamation marks and joy! Suddenly the world turns into a sketchbook in game?! Garry says don't worry, we can handle it! OPTIMISM!

He's also quite smart. Garry is capable of solving puzzles, remembering small details, and being innovative when it comes to figuring things out.

Garry is very protective, especially towards kids, and especially since one saved his life. He views himself as a brother to Ib because of their bonding over mutual pain.

He is extremely pleasant to be around, even in the hellhole that is the gallery. Garry, during the course of the game, is quite cheerful to the player and says silly gestures like "Ta-da!" when opening a path. His personality is insanely chipper for someone who's lost in a world of evil paintings.

Gary is selfless. In another ending that doesn't change his personality at all, he gladly sacrifices his life for Ib's life. He believes they will get the rose back once given, but he eventually does come to terms with his eventual death.

Only once does he waver in voicing that everything will be okay, and at the time, things were pretty bad. After he voices his nervousness, he turns around to apologize.

It's hard to tell if this cheeriness is a way to comfort the player from all the scary as shit things happening. When he's alone, without Ib, Garry tends to be a little bit more unsure.

Abilities/Special Powers: Garry is hilariously normal. He has no abilities or special powers.

Third-Person Sample:

He jumped through, and saw the real world outside. However, it was nothing but a fleeting glimmer before he was tossed into somewhere entire different. The air smelt similar here. The paintings and the mirrors on the walls seemed only vaguely familiar. He was here, alone, without Ib.

But he was just holding her hand! He searched behind him, searched under his coat, but the little red eyed girl was nowhere to be found. They were separated again. Things kept getting worse and worse, and this was just part of everything getting more and more horrific. At least the walls were no longer covered in crayon. Mary's strange childlike world was a memory, but he wondered if he'd rather be there than here.

(THIS ^ NEEDS A REWRITE LOL)

Ib?! Where are you?!
Ib?!

[Pause.]

I'd better investigate this place and try to find Ib. But that means..going back there.

[He carefully opens the door to the hallway, which shows the paintings lining the walls.]

..Ah! None of the paintings moved. Maybe these are normal..
It's almost humorous. A few hours ago I would have called myself crazy for being wary of paintings.
